Dear friends,

Dear President Joel,

I am delighted to accept your offer of the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity. To me it is an affirmation of a life-long commitment to serve the Jewish people with excellence and devotion. I appreciate how special is this honor. I am happy to share it with my family, my teachers and all devoted rabbinic colleagues that serve the community.

I was indeed blessed to have parents who guided me in the ways of Modern Orthodoxy from my earliest youth. My community rabbis and teachers strengthened this path as well. Finally, my years of study at Yeshiva University placed me firmly in the forefront of community affairs with the appropriate knowledge and attitudes to further this noble direction. I am grateful for everything I received along the way. The memory and presence of my distinguished teacher, the Rav, Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik, is always dear to me.

I look forward to the upcoming event and to celebrating with you and the other representatives of Yeshiva, the Montreal Jewish community, my congregation, friends and family. Please convey my esteem to the officers of Yeshiva and your colleagues. Rabbi Dobrinsky was especially helpful to me in my early career and guided me to the Spanish- Portuguese Congregation which I have now served for thirty-nine years.

Sincerely,
Howard S. Joseph
